Every time I see something about “more like the monster-of-the-week format of earlier seasons” or anything of that nature, I have to wonder: Just what is this person smoking?
It was never as simple as a monster of the week. Never. The very first episode of season one set up a plot that took five seasons to complete. Yeah, there were filler episodes in early seasons that weren’t so closely focused on that plot… but season 7 has been almost nothing but monster-of-the-week filler episodes! The early seasons had a large, over-reaching plot, and it knew where it was going. That, my friends, is the difference between seasons 1-5 and seasons 6-7. Not the “monster-of-the-week format” - the fact that there was a large, over-reaching, coherent plot that knew where it was going and how it was going to get there. These last two seasons have just sort of aimlessly meandered from episode one to the season finale.
That, my friends, is what happens when a show continues two seasons beyond what the creator of the show intended.

No, you are not the only one… it’s actually quite jarring to go back and watch season 1 after watching season 7. Though by late in season 1 they had both gotten a little deeper - if you really want jarring, watch a season 7 episode then watch the first episode. Jensen especially sounds 12.

I’m pretty sure he was using Sam as bait - and I’m pretty sure Dean figured it out, because of the way he apologized to Sam. That was more than just an “I’m sorry I left you alone.” I got the feeling he was sorry Sam got used as bait, and he couldn’t do anything about it.

Someone in the Supernatural fandom with fan-video making skills should totally make a season 7 Sam Winchester video using this song. Seriously… watch and read the lyrics.
I’d do it, if I knew how.
Exactly. I never thought he was actually in love with Lisa. Sure, he cared about her, and he loved Ben, but that’s not the same thing. The only reason he even went to her after Sammy jumped in the pit is because he promised Sam he would. If Sam hadn’t made him promise, Dean would have found a way to self-destruct in a very short amount of time.

Repo Man
Seriously? That was supposed to be Sam having a psychotic break? Come on. I was expecting him to go on a killing spree or something, not just hallucinate Lucifer again and think he’s surrounded by flames.
Okay, and that “flashback” to four years ago at the beginning? Couldn’t they have made some effort to wrangle Sam’s hair into a style resembling season 3 hair? I mean honestly. Or, I don’t know, used a case that was actually in an episode? I don’t really know which one, I haven’t thought about it, but that was possibly the worst flashback scene I’ve ever seen.
Lucifer’s forked tongue was creepy. Aside from that, I’m having a hard time disliking Lucifer in this episode. He’s so sassy. And I loved the exchange between him and Sam about the ritual:
Sam: A demon summoning? Why?
Lucifer: Why? To summon demons, jackass.
All in all, not one of my favorite episodes. It just… didn’t flow right. And now we’re down to 8 episodes left and still no leads on killing the Leviathans. They need to get with the program.
I totally agree. Come on, without those storylines that cover an entire season or more, the monster-of-the-week hunts would get boring, fast. You need those big storylines to make sure there’s a reason to keep watching.
(And anyone who says the first season was “simple” and only had the monster-of-the-week must have slept through it, because season 1 started a storyline that took five seasons to bring to a conclusion.)
